He and his wife, June visited the Craftsmanship Museum in Carlsbad, CA on September 2, 2011 to display and discuss the model for local visitors. It was the last time the engine will be run before being reinstalled in the car. Video of the special event has been posted HERE.”

I also decided on moveable trim tabs and rudder and planned to use it as a decorative piece if I could complete it. At this point the tail was my only objective. When the world’s only flyable Northrop P-61B Black Widow returns to the skies a few years from now under the command of Mid-Atlantic Air Museum director Russ Strine, it will do so at an appropriately named airport – the Carl Spaatz Field, in Reading, Pennsylvania. Chevak High School students build a plane and watch it fly | Alaska Dispatch
“Chevak students and family members gathered in brisk conditions to watch as the Rans S-6S Coyote took flight over the tundra, after receiving its airworthiness inspection and certification. The aircraft was built by Chevak High School students as part of an aviation course offered by the school located on the tundra in western Alaska.

” The students of Chevak Aviation (chevakaviation.com) at Chevak School have been working on a Build A Plane Rans S-6S kit airplane. We completed the Rans and passed the airworthiness inspection on March 24th, 2011. After the inspection and all the necessary paper work was completed we took advantage of the nice weather and flew the airplane. The maiden flight lasted for 30 minutes and it went as planned. The S-6 is a very nice flying airplane with great performance. “

“GPS has been the biggest game changer. Before GPS with few navaids available you really had to know the country to navigate to a village in low visibility. Many of the villages out on the tundra are really hard to find even in CAVU. Now you just follow the line right to the runway and the things will even tell you where the terrain is. When I started my first flying job (before GPS) I was warned by my boss that all my passengers had more hours flying in that area and would know the country better than I did. He told me about the “Eskimo ADF” which means you watch your passengers and when all their heads turn at once you probably just flew past their village.”

“New York to London SR-71 Speed Run – On September 1, 1974 Major James V. Sullivan, 37 (pilot) and Noel F. Widdifield, 33 (reconnaissance systems officer) (photo inset), flashed across the starting line (radar gates in New York) at approximately 80,000 feet and speed in excess of 2,000 miles per hour. Exactly 1 hour 54 minutes and 56.4 seconds later, they had set a new world speed record from New York to London England. The average speed was 1,807 statute mph over the 3,461 statute mile course, slowing to refuel one time from a specially modified KC-135 refueling tanker. “
